Troubleshooting Ignition Issues

Although it is tempting to assume that a dead battery is to blame for a vehicle not starting, it is often the ignition which is the culprit. To determine if it is the starter that is to blame, it is helpful to look at some common faulty ignition warning signs.

The most obvious sign is grinding noise coming from the engine. If you crank the engine and are only met with a whirring sound, it is possible your starter gear is freewheeling, which is another cause for concern. A presence of smoke, a burning smell, or an oil soak located around the starter are additional signals that your ignition should be examined. A damaged solenoid will also cause the starter to malfunction.
